The Power of Priming

The Power of Priming: Preparing Your Mind for Success

During my time in the Marine Corps, I spent many years as an assault breacher, the person responsible for gaining access to enclosures through dynamic entry. I blew up doors to make a SWAT-style entry into buildings—a pretty cool job, I must admit. However, every explosive charge I built required a system to set it off. This setup is referred to as a priming system. No matter the amount of explosives or how elaborate the design is, each charge has to be primed.

To prime means to prepare or make ready for a particular purpose or operation. Similar to our lives, no matter how elaborate the plan or purposeful our intentions are, we work better when we're primed. We can make an explosive entry into every day by creating a priming system. How we start our day significantly impacts our thoughts, emotions, and actions. We can influence our overall outlook and productivity by consciously engaging in activities that promote positive emotions and mental clarity. Priming helps to clear mental clutter, reduce stress, and enhance focus, enabling us to approach challenges with a resilient and empowered mindset.

How our minds associate certain triggers with thoughts is the key to priming. Our brain is compartmentalized into different regions that are responsible for various functions and information processing. The more we pass information through multiple areas, the greater the chance of committing it to memory. This data is then stored in schemas in long-term memory. The more these units are activated, the more accessible the information becomes to the conscious mind. When activated together and frequently, they form stronger connections, creating a network of stored information in the brain. Priming enhances the accessibility of this information, effectively rewiring our brains to develop a thought process more aligned with our purpose and focused on our desired outcomes.

The Benefits of Priming

Engaging in a daily priming practice can yield numerous benefits:

Enhanced Mental Clarity

Priming helps clear the mind of negative thoughts and distractions, allowing for better focus and decision-making. By starting your day with a clear and focused mind, you can approach tasks with greater precision and confidence. This mental clarity allows you to process information more efficiently, make better decisions, and solve problems more effectively.

Improved Emotional State

Priming reduces stress and anxiety by engaging in practices that foster positive emotions, leading to a more balanced emotional state. By regularly focusing on gratitude, prayer, or meditation, you can cultivate a sense of peace and contentment. This positive emotional state not only enhances your mood but also improves your interactions with others, leading to healthier relationships and a more fulfilling life.

Increased Productivity

A clear mind and positive emotional state increase efficiency and effectiveness in daily tasks. When you are mentally and emotionally balanced, you can prioritize tasks better, manage your time more effectively, and stay motivated throughout the day. This heightened productivity allows you to accomplish more in less time, leading to greater success in both personal and professional endeavors.

Greater Resilience

Priming builds mental and emotional resilience, enabling better-coping mechanisms in the face of adversity. By regularly engaging in practices that strengthen your mental and emotional health, you become better equipped to handle stress, setbacks, and challenges. This resilience allows you to bounce back from difficulties more quickly and maintain a positive outlook, even in tough situations.

Alignment with Goals

Priming ensures that your actions are aligned with your long-term objectives by regularly focusing on your goals and intentions. By visualizing your goals and setting clear intentions each day, you can stay focused on what truly matters to you. This alignment helps you make decisions that are consistent with your values and aspirations, leading to a more purposeful and fulfilling life.

10-Minute Priming

To incorporate priming into your daily routine, here's a structured 10-minute exercise that combines breathwork, prayer, gratitude, and intention. This is something that I have practiced in my life for quite some time, and I can honestly see and feel the difference when I neglect to make it a part of my daily practice.

1. One Minute of Breathwork

  • Purpose: To quiet the mind and center yourself.

  • Exercise: Sit comfortably with your eyes closed. Breathing deep in from the belly and then into the chest. Inhale fully and deeply through your nose for four seconds in and exhale naturally through your mouth for a four-second out. Repeat for one minute.

2. Three Minutes of Prayer

  • Purpose: To connect with God, or a higher power or higher self, fostering a sense of purpose and alignment.

  • Exercise: Spend three minutes in prayer or meditation. Focus on seeking guidance, strength, and clarity. You can use a specific prayer or simply communicate your thoughts and feelings.

3. Three Minutes of Gratitude

  • Purpose: To shift your focus to positive aspects of your life, enhancing overall happiness and well-being.

  • Exercise: Reflect on three things you are grateful for. Visualize each one vividly and immerse yourself in the feeling of gratitude. Spend one minute on each, savoring the positive emotions.

4. Three Minutes of Intentions

  • Purpose: To set immediate and long-term goals, creating a roadmap for your actions.

  • Exercise: Spend one minute visualizing your goals for the day. Picture yourself successfully completing each task with ease and confidence. Then, spend the remaining two minutes focusing on your long-term aspirations. Visualize the steps you need to take and what ultimate achievement looks like. Feel the emotions associated with their accomplishment.

By dedicating just ten minutes each day to priming, you can significantly impact your mental and emotional state, setting a positive tone for the rest of the day. To maximize time and impact, try practicing this while earthing with the first-morning sun (Check out Go Touch Grass). You can also listen to one of our ad-free meditation videos for to block out outside noise and increase focus. This approach to priming is a testament to the power of intentionality and the profound effects it can have on our lives, all the while deepening our relationship with God. Start your day with this simple yet powerful routine, and watch as your clarity, productivity, and overall well-being soar.
